Sources of shoulder pain: The neck
-Surprisingly, a very high number of shoulder pain athletes I work with don’t truly have shoulder pain.
-The neck is a major referral source for shoulder pain. When you feel pain between the shoulder blades it is commonly referred from the lower neck.
-I’ve seen too many unnecessary surgeries occur because a thorough examination wasn’t performed and neck pain masking as shoulder pain was missed. (it’s no wonder the shoulder surgery ‘failed’)
-I’ve included a picture of what’s known as facet referred pain and how the neck can mask as shoulder pain (below).
-How do I know if it’s shoulder pain or neck pain that looks like shoulder pain?
-This is where clinical skills come in. In order to fully rule in/out what may be causing your shoulder pain, I would take you through a thorough exam that would help you determine the source of your pain.
-If you’re unsure if it’s neck pain or shoulder pain that’s holding you back, be sure to take advantage of the consultation services I offer.
